Ever since having my first child a few months ago, I’ve been trying to lose about twenty stubborn pounds. I’ve tried the popular diets out there and read all variety of diet books. These books link weight loss to all kinds of things I would never have considered: evolutionary trends, genetics, family medical history, blood type, ethnicity… the list goes on.
But one aspect of life I never considered being connected to diet and weight loss is spirituality. In her book A Course In Weight Loss, author Marianne Williamson strives to make this connection.
How Does A Course In Weight Loss Work?
To understand how this book works, I researched the author's basic premise. In A Course In Weight Loss, Williamson links various common problems with diet and weight loss to spiritual issues. For example, Williamson describes one of the main reasons for long term problems with losing weight as a spiritual fear or self loathing.
In my research, I found that author Marianne Williamson is an acknowledged expert in her field, and has appeared on Oprah and other television programs to discuss the subject of spirituality in weight loss.
Does A Course In Weight Loss Really Deliver?
For those who have long term problems losing weight and who would consider themselves to be spiritual in nature, A Course In Weight Loss will likely deliver the goods! For those who are uninterested in examining weight loss from a spiritual perspective, the book will likely not live up to its glowing testimonials.
However, Amazon.com reviewer Bill Cashell points out that "the spiritual ideas presented may still provide fresh new ideas related to weight loss that readers will find useful".
Will It Help Me Lose Weight?
If you fit the demographic I described above, this book is likely to help you in your weight loss quest. Instead of a typical diet book, A Course In Weight Loss skips the recipes and regimens and simply provides logical, spiritually-minded advice and ideas. Personally, I find the concept of a link between spirituality and weight loss to be intriguing, but I am not sure if it applies to everyone.
Are all problems losing weight really spiritual, or are some perhaps physical, psychological, or even caused by one's environment or surroundings? I am intrigued with Williamson’s premise and interested in learning more about her ideas.
• The book covers an interesting, mostly unexplored aspect of weight loss and dieting.

• The author is a renowned expert in her field.
• Exercises and spiritual tools are included to help motivate and invigorate readers.
• This book is not intended to be a standalone diet book, but to work as part of an overall weight loss plan.
• Readers who are not interested in the spiritual aspects of weight loss will not glean much from this book.
Problems and Complaints
Most Amazon.com reviewers rated A Course In Weight Loss favorably. However, negative reviewers were prone to give “1 star” reviews. Negative reviews were mostly centered around the content of the book, which some readers felt rehashed information available in other books. Others were simply found themselves uninterested or bored by the book.
A small percentage of readers found the tone to be inauthentic or forced. Other readers, such as Cheryl Cash , found that "A Course In Weight Loss did not cover food addiction and eating disorders adequately".
Is A Course In Weight Loss Better Than Other Diet Books?
In many ways, A Course In Weight Loss is not your typical diet book. There are no recipes or daily regimens for losing weight. There are no plans for how to drop 30 pounds in 30 days. Instead, the book provides a new spin on a familiar topic by examining links between spirituality and weight loss. In that sense, yes, this book is “better” than other diet books because it examines an area that many other books ignore.
How Does A Course In Weight Loss Rate Overall?
Amazon.com reviewers gave A Course In Weight Loss a 4.5 star rating out of 5 possible stars. Most reviewers cited the book as having an inspirational, motivational tone, highly organized layout, and fresh perspective on weight loss.
