Coffee for weight loss: Friend or Foe?

February 3, 2012 by admin Leave a Comment

Many of us try to go through all the diet plans that are available in books, the internet and lap up all the information in a jiffy and conveniently forget about it. Losing weight is not easy but most of us do wish that it would have been an easier task to do.

Well, there's some news – for those who enjoy that hot cup of coffee in the morning, as your favorite drink could perhaps help in you losing some weight as some studies have shown that a few cups of coffee intake offers various health benefits and also helps you shed those stubborn pounds.

However, you can knock out the flab if you drink only black unsweetened coffee otherwise you would probably end up gaining with your sweetened coffees with whipped cream. It should be noted that these studies have yet not reached a formal conclusion regarding a positive relationship between coffee intake and weight loss – however, the possibility seems likely!

How can you lose weight by drinking coffee?

There are three apparent things that coffee does to your body, which can later on lead to a considerable weight loss in you. Firstly, it suppresses your appetite which can prevent you from piling in on unnecessary calories through snacking. However, the duration of how long your appetite will be suppressed is still not clear. Secondly, the caffeine in coffee has diuretic properties that make your trips to the bathroom more frequent leading to water loss. However, it is to be noted that water loss is temporary and since you are not losing fat, you are not actually reducing weight in the right way. Thirdly, coffee is thought to have thermogenic properties and hence makes it capable of burning fat. Furthermore, caffeine also boosts your metabolism for burning those extra calories, so that they do not end up as fat.

Dangers from drinking too much coffee

Whatever we eat or drink should be done in moderation and that stands true for coffee drinkers too! Before you embark on a multiple coffee cup diet, it is important to know that excessive caffeine intake has its potential side effects. The quantity of caffeine in coffee also depends upon the brewing method, for instance if you enjoy espressos then you are definitely taking huge amounts of caffeine which can later lead to insomnia and a disruption in your daily activities due to lack of sleep. Furthermore, it can lead to a sense of nervousness, increased blood pressure and nausea, amongst various other problems.

How many calories do you have in coffee?

Another reason why we prefer to associate coffee with weight loss is because it contains no calories. However, this does not mean that you will lose weight for sure, but it will surely keep your weight stable if you are having black non-sweetened coffee. However, if you are one of those that like their coffee sugary and milky, then you are on the wrong track my friend – as you will actually be loading in useless calories in a bid to lose weight!

Does drinking more coffee mean more weight loss?

Drinking more than moderate amounts of coffee is certainly not good for your health and this most certainly outweighs the weight loss benefits that you might gain out of doing so. The best thing to do here would be to increase the amount of coffee slightly and enjoy the benefits that you get out of it, rather than overindulge in it and end up with other ailments!

Does coffee really help in reducing weight?

Coffee does seem to have some association with weight loss, but the studies and researches have not really concluded this with certainty. Coffee might contribute to helping you lose weight, but it cannot be used as a substitute for healthy eating and regular exercise. However, if had black and unsweetened, coffee does have valuable thermogenic properties that could assist you with weight loss; if combined with a healthy diet and workout too. So enjoy your coffee in moderation and enjoy whatever benefits you derive out of it!
