Dancing With the Stars is a hit TV show. After gaining success in the US, spin offs around the world started to pop up. The stars that debuted on the show enjoyed a renewed sense of fame again. And with that fame came interviews. During the interviews it was always commented how much better these celebrities looked.
Most people admitted that it was the intense exercise, practice and rehearsals in preparation for the show. Indeed, dancing can burn a lot of calories and help drop those pesky pounds. So it only made sense that the TV show would spin a fitness DVD based on dancing called "Dancing With the Stars: Cardio Dance".
How Does "Dancing With the Stars: Cardio Dance DVD" Work?
In the video below you can watch a small demonstration of the different dance routines. These diverse dance styles will help you to both lower your calories and burn your fat as well, in an effective and quick way.
"Cardio Dance DVD" follows a very basic and simple routine of warm up sessions, some heavy cardio, and then a relaxing cool down. Three professional dancers from the show, Ashley Costa, Kym Johnson, and Maksim Chmerkovsy, teach the home user how to dance to the cha-cha, the jive, and the paso doble.
Each will have the home fitness buff or beginner up and moving with the heart pumping, and having fun. The run time for the entire disc is about 60 minutes. Beginners will have a bit of a learning curve with this program, while people familiar with these dances will be able to jump right in without much issue.
What Are Others Saying? Does the "Dancing With the Stars: Cardio Dance DVD" deliver?
The stars have stated numerous times on countless interviews about how much weight they lost and how toned their bodies got from competing on this show. But what about the normal home user?
Jennifer seemed to think it was pretty fun. That fun comes with caution though. There is very little to no tutorial on how to start performing these dances. The instructors jump right into the action. She warns that anyone with no sense of rhythm, or with two left feet, will be lost and become frustrated quickly.
Leslie is a little overweight, she admits. The workouts and dances looked fun. But for beginners, out of shape, or over weight folk this program may be too difficult at best. She only tried the Swing dancing because of her size, which involved bouncing on one foot for a couple of the moves. This can be difficult and very demotivational for some people, turning them away from exercise.
Still though, the DVD isn’t all bad news. It does provide a good work out. Susan said the workouts are simply amazing. The opinions are very mixed about this though.
How Much Weight Will I Lose?
Dancing can be a great and fun way to lose weight. With that said, this title isn’t as intense as a program designed by the likes of Jillian Micheals. And the instructions are almost non existent. This may lead some users away in frustration. But for some people, the exercise with this DVD can indeed yield good results. Over the period of summer break, I can easily see a person dropping about 20 pounds.
Dancing is great exercise. However, with the dance come a lot of rapid movements and joint twisting. I highly recommend for anyone with joint problems, knee issues, back problems, or arthritis to talk with their family doctor before starting any new cardio routine.
- Great exercise
- Will be a motivational force for some to start a new lifestyle
- Learn new dances
- Terms aren’t explained well
- Not for serious dancers
- Not enough motivation from the coaches
- Personality of the instructors can be a put off
- Not real tutorial
Problems And Complaints
This is not going to be the work out DVD of the new generation. It is geared more towards a beginner crowd that really enjoyed "Dancing With the Stars". It is not a top-rated workout session for those that are more physically fit.
My biggest issue is the simple lack of instruction. It almost seems clear that the producers of "Dancing With the Stars" wanted to make an extra buck off the name. There is almost no instruction for new users. Those with little dance experience or poor coordination will have great difficulty with this title.
The choreography is also off. This DVD feels like the instructors just were having fun and deciding what to do on the fly. It does not feel like they practiced or had any sort of story board to follow.
How Does It Rate Overall?
Ultimately how does this program rate overall? It is hard to place a title like this in an over all generalization. But, I see beginners with a little dance background getting the most use from this DVD. The cardio dance moves will help lose weight.
It has the potential to be a nice workout if the user is not turned away in frustration. More physically fit people will find little challenge from this title though. For the fitness-minded person there are better titles to give better results with more clear instructions.
