Weight loss surgery is supposed to produce results that fad diets and crash exercise routines do not; that is permanent weight loss. The surgery requires a lifestyle change in conjunction with the body’s inability to handle mass amounts of food. Dietician Beth explains the difficulties Realize patients face after surgery due to their poor diet mentality.
"Physiologically and psychologically it is difficult for patients to not just lose the weight but keep the weight off. Patients get into this diet mentality that they have to eat off a list of foods or they want three weeks worth of sample menus."
"What we want to do with the band is move patients away from the diet mentality and just teach them how to eat healthy. When patients present to me for surgery, certainly they have had years and years of failed diet attempts. They come to me and they feel like a failure and it’s not uncommon for patients to say to me, “Beth I’m embarrassed that I’m here. I’m embarrassed that I actually have to do something so drastic to help me gain control over my eating habits. What I tell patients is, “that they didn’t fail the diet, the diet failed them”. So perusing the band, what we teach them is how to utilize this tool, and how to make good food choices and how to adopt healthy eating practices."
"When patients come to see me post-operatively and after they have had their first fill they have say, ‘Beth this is the first time I’ve felt full, I cannot remember a time where I was able to eat my meal and leave the table feeling satisfied.’ It’s a very welcoming feeling to these patients. They almost feel like they have a weight lifted off of their shoulders and they truly are grateful that they have this feeling of satisfaction."
Health Benefits of the Realize Band
"Patients experience numerous physical and mental benefits after surgery. It is a professional privilege to be able to watch these patients transform in front of your very eyes. We see an improvement in blood sugar and blood pressure and sleep apnea. We find patients have more confidence, their relationships grow, they are able to pursue their dream job. That’s something that they didn’t have the confidence to do prior to surgery. We see patients are traveling comfortably, going to amusement parks, able to get on a plane and ride comfortably. So watching the transformation of these patients is a wonderful experience."
In a way, going through with a weight loss procedure quickly forces the patient to change their habits in making better lifestyle choices. Along with the associated physical changes that result from weight loss surgery, post-operative patients report many other benefits such as an increase with their medical health or positive personality changes.
