Get Skinny with Healthy Junk Food
If you want to get skinny, you’ll never do it by gobbling down junk food. You can’t do it on celery and water either. The key to shedding pounds and finally getting into shape is understanding your food cravings and responding to them appropriately.
You crave junk food for a good reason. For one, you need protein, fat, and sugar to survive. If you deny yourself these necessities, your body will go into starvation mode and you’ll never lose weight.
The burgers, fries, potato chips, and snack cakes you crave don’t give you the right amount of protein, fat, and sugar. Instead, they use chemicals to fool your body into thinking you’re taking in these necessities.
It has been proven that junk food manufacturing companies spend millions of dollars figuring out just how to fool their customers into thinking they’re eating something healthy. The New York Times put out a report earlier this year that really broke down, “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food”.
You Can’t Get Skinny with Diet Food
Millions of people fall into the trap of eating diet food to shed those extra pounds. Unfortunately, diet food does absolutely nothing to help you lose weight. It also can make you very sick. Most diet foods contain high fructose corn syrup, which tricks your body into overeating and packing on the pounds. These food-like products also contain unhealthy additives, preservatives, and chemicals that have been linked to the development of autoimmune disease, diabetes, and cancer.
The Importance of Reading Food Labels
If you want to get skinny the fast and healthy way, get familiar with food labels. Not only will this help you meet your weight-loss goals, it will also help prevent the development of serious disease. Reading and understanding food labels is the best thing you can do for your health.
The best rule to follow is to choose foods with 5 or fewer ingredients.
Opt for organic and stay away from foods containing chemicals you can’t pronounce. Also, look for labels that say non-GMO. Genetically-modified foods are horrible for your health as they deliver gut-destroying pesticides into your system with every bite.
Healthy Junk Food Can Help You Shed Pounds
No matter what type of junk food you crave, there is a healthier, more natural version of it out there in your supermarket.
- Potato Chips & Hummus
Just because you’re trying to lose weight doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy potato chips every once in the while. Not all of these favorite snack foods are created equal. If you want to snack on them look for a variety that contains potatoes, oil, salt and that’s it. Nothing more. Hummus is a savory spread made from protein-packed chick peas. These make a good healthy junk food to replace some of the chemical snacks you’ve been eating.
- Home-Made Trail Mix
Trail mix may seem like a healthy choice at first glance but a lot of those pre-mixed ones contain candy that won’t help you lose weight. Instead, make some at home. Add whole nuts, coconut flakes, dried fruit, and semi-sweet dark chocolate to a bag and you have a healthy snack for the week.
- Dark Chocolate
Speaking of dark chocolate, it’s one of the healthiest junk foods you can eat if you know the kind to look for. Choose non-GMO dark chocolate with at least 79% cacao. Dark chocolate makes you feel full and satisfied, even if you only eat a small amount. It has just the right amount of sweetness and fat to fill you up and keep those cravings at bay.
Can’t stop craving those drive-through chocolate shakes? You can have your smoothie and drink it too if you make them at home. Try mixing nut butter, yogurt, semi-sweet chocolate chips, chocolate almond milk, and organic frozen fruit into a blender. Have that for breakfast and kiss those fast-food cravings goodbye.
- Fruit and Sugar
Think a bowl of fruit has to be boring? Not at all. Organic blueberries or strawberries topped with raw organic sugar or Stevia can make a great morning treat or guilt-free snack.
- Frozen Yogurt
Frozen yogurt is a favorite healthy junk food but watch the brand you buy. Many frozen yogurt brands contain dangerous additives and preservatives that do nothing to improve your health. Even “natural” brands sneak in high fructose corn syrup. Instead, choose organic frozen yogurt in your favorite ice cream flavor for a healthier, low-calorie treat.
- Healthy Bacon and Cheddar Cheeseburgers
When you’re just dying for a real fast-food fix, try making your favorite treat at home. Take bacon cheeseburgers for example. All you need to make them at home is organic bread, grass-fed beef, sliced cheddar cheese, organic bacon, and the toppings of your choice. You’ll save calories and avoid all of the chemical ingredients found in that 99 cent version.
Finding healthy junk food to enjoy is a simple matter of understanding the difference between food and food-like products. Anything you can find in a vending machine or a drive through can be found or prepared in a more natural way. To get skinny the healthy way, don’t eat less food, eat smarter food.
