How High Calorie Beverages Can Affect Weight Loss

When people start counting calories in an effort to lose weight, they often fail to count those that are in the beverages that we drink. Many people have the misconception that drinks can't possibly have that many calories, when in fact there are many high calorie beverages that can have an extremely negative impact on how you lose weight.

In some cases, a person may very well be consuming a full day's worth of recommended calories just in their beverages alone! When you combine with the calories that you get from the food that you eat, your daily caloric intake skyrockets and the weight packs on quickly. Even if you reduce the amount of calories that you eat from food, failing to watch the ones that you drink will have a seriously negative impact on how much weight you can lose.

Common High Calorie Drinks

The following is a general list of some of the highest calorie drinks that are commonly consumed by people each day:

  • 8 oz. Cola=93 calories
  • 8 oz. Orange Juice=102 calories
  • 8 oz. Apple Juice=107
  • 8 oz. Whole Milk=147 calories
  • 8 oz. Reduced Fat Milk=123 calories

While there are some drinks that are very low calorie, such as coffee or tea, the items that a person generally adds to these beverages dramatically increase the amount of energy they contain. Just one tablespoon of granulated white sugar added to these drinks adds 46 calories. Considering that most people enjoy their coffee or tea very sweet and add more than one tablespoon at a time, you can easily see how quickly a relatively low calorie drink can become high in no time.

Another thing that many people fail to realize is that they often drink more than a single serving of these beverages at one sitting. A store bought cola drink usually contains two full servings, meaning that you are actually consuming twice the number of the calories listed on the bottle. Even when you pour your own drinks at home, chances are you are pouring far more than just a small 8 oz. serving and are doubling or even tripling your caloric intake of that one single beverage.

In order to be successful at weight loss, it is essential that you not only watch the calories you consume when you eat, but watch those that you drink as well. Limit your beverage intake to single servings of the drink, and replace many of the high calorie drinks you consume with water or a sugar-free version.
