With a title like Skinny Bitch, you know a book is going to be controversial. And Skinny Bitch has certainly lived up to its name, becoming massively popular in some circles while derided in others. Authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin outline a series of drastically alternative ideas about diet and weight loss in this popular book.
Amongst these ideas, they suggest giving up eating meat entirely, frequent fasting, and removing soda and other processed sweets from our diets. But more than simply providing these weight loss recommendations, the authors serve up their suggestions with sass.
How Does Skinny Bitch Work?
Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin use graphic depictions of the lives of animals on farms, frequent profanity and language which actually derides the reader to hammer their points home. It's no wonder that so many readers walked away from the book feeling angry or alienated. However, it would seem an equal number achieved great success by adopting the ideals set forth in Skinny Bitch.
More than weight loss or diet book, Skinny Bitch suggests a sea change in the way we examine or diets– starting with actually examining out diets. I know that personally, I consider the foods which I eat very little. By this, I mean that I do not think about where a particular food item came from or how it arrived on my dinner table. Skinny Bitch would have us more closely examine the relationships between our bodies and our food– a seemingly innocuous idea which has major repercussions in the way we eat.
Does Skinny Bitch Really Deliver?
With a book this controversial, it's tough to predict its efficacy in helping readers lose weight. Reviewers like Melissa Niksic gave cautiously optimistic praise for the book, noting some of its drawbacks (see below) while lauding many of the suggestions found in the book. The vast majority of readers seem to have taken away some, but not all, of the principles outline in Skinny Bitch.
Will It Help Me Lose Weight?
Many of the ideas presented in Skinny Bitch are widely considered to be solid weight loss advice. However, some of the concepts (such as fasting and removing meat from one's diet entirely) are not generally accepted in the mainstream weight loss community. If you are an “out of the box” type of person, vegetarian (or vegan), or simply someone who is fed up with “yo yo dieting,” Skinny Bitch may be the book to help you drop the pounds for good.
- Written in a humorous, lively, straight talking manner.
- A massively popular diet concept that has worked for many readers.
- Offers the potential to shift the way readers think about their diets and weight loss.
- Graphic depictions of slaughterhouses and conditions on factory farms.
- Profanity appears throughout the book.
- Suggests dietary changes difficult for many readers (such as giving up meat, soda, or fasting).
Problems and Complaints
Skinny Bitch has received widely varying and mixed reviews. Readers such as Kelly A. McHale noted that some sections of Skinny Bitch "did not live up to the books overall goal of providing women with information about eating healthier diets", as they suggested eating heavily processed meat substitutes. Others echoed these sentiments, and many readers were concerned with how graphic certain sections of the book were. Still others took issue with the book's frequent profanity, starting with the title!
Is Skinny Bitch Better Than Other Diet Books?
In most respects, Skinny Bitch is not a diet book. Concepts regarding weight loss are presented, but my research found that most readers took away ideas related to the farming industry, food politics and the meat industry rather than weight loss tips and advice.
However, Skinny Bitch represents a growing and powerful phenomenon in the weight loss community (vegetarianism and/or veganism), and packs a powerful punch when it comes to shifting the way we think about what we eat.
How Does Skinny Bitch Rate Overall?
Amazon.com reviewers gave Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin a 3 star rating out of 5 possible stars. On balance, reviewers said that Skinny Bitch offers a biased, controversial, but potentially powerful alternative to mainstream weight loss thinking.
