Review By Pam Marshall
Forget about prepackaged “diet food”, forget about counting calories and banishing carbs from your life. With the Sonoma Diet, you don’t have to. Finally, losing weight doesn’t have to be about restrictions. As a matter of fact, according to Connie Gutterson, the author of The Sonoma Diet, mealtime should be a time for celebration!
And if you appreciate the sensual and flavorable nuances of Mediterranean foods, you’ll definitely have cause to celebrate. Inspired by the Mediterranean diet, the Sonoma Diet encourages a plethora of whole foods that return you to the vitality and good health of your youth. Foods that have appeal to the senses with crisp flavor and visual appeal.
What’s So Unique About The Sonoma Diet? Power Foods.
At the core of the Sonoma Diet are 10 crucial power foods that are not only delicious, but in the right proportions are essential to weight loss and good health. They are…
• Almonds
• Bell peppers
• Blueberries
• Broccoli
• Grapes
• Olive oil
• Spinach
• Strawberries
• Tomatoes
• Whole grains
The meals in the Sonoma Diet incorporate these practical, yet powerful, whole foods in order to give you high nutritional value in relatively low calorie foods.
How Does The Sonoma Diet Work?
Gutterson states the Sonoma Diet is neither low-fat or low-carbohydrate. Essential fats, proteins, and complex carbohydrates are encouraged from day one. However, the foods are nutrient rich, so sugars, saturated fats, and refined white flour are not a part of the menu.
The Sonoma Diet takes a practical approach when it comes to portion control. At each meal, you’re assigned either a 7-inch plate or a 9-inch plate. Instead of counting calories, you learn to judge correct portions by how much room they occupy on a plate. Pretty simple, right?
The Three Waves Of The Sonoma Diet
As with many diets today, the Sonoma Diet is broken down into phases, or waves.
The first wave is designed to crash your craving for unhealthy carbs. However you are allowed whole grain cereal and breads. No sugars, though, and that includes natural sugar from fruits. This phase lasts for 10 days and this is where you’ll get accustomed to the allowed portions and a taste of truly healthy eating. The really good news is during wave one, the weight drops off quickly.
The second wave is the mainstay of the diet. This is where you’ll stay until you reach your target weight. Here more foods are introduced, including fruits and even wine. In phase two you’ll learn to enjoy your meals the Sonoma way – savoring your meals with a focus on healthy pleasure.
The third wave is the maintenance phase. This phase is intended to be for life. You’ll carry on with Sonoma compatible foods, but you can have an occasional indulgence such a snacks and desserts.
