What is TRX Training?
by Jeff Miles (and Matthew Denos)
TRX Training is the brainchild of U.S. Navy Seal, Randy Hetrick, who designed the prototype of the TRX Suspension Trainer as a means of maintaining peak fitness while on missions. He later founded Fitness Anywhere LLC, whose stated mission is to aid its customers in achieving peak physical condition.
The TRX Suspension Trainer is the core product offered by the company. Fully portable, the suspension trainer is primarily a system of straps and handles that utilizes body weight and gravity to develop strength, flexibility, balance and stability.
TRX Training also offers the TRX Rip Trainer, which utilizes a lever bar and resistance cord to provide variable resistance training. Exercise manuals, DVDs, and video downloads demonstrate the proper use of the equipment.
Why TRX Training?
Randy Hetrick, former navy seal and founder of Fitness Anywhere, explains the benefits of TRX training.
The exercise tools provided by TRX Training will give you a full body workout in the convenience of your home, hotel, or backyard for less than the annual cost of a gym membership, which can be $250 or more. Its portability makes it ideal for someone who has to travel a lot. The downside is, of course, that you’ll no longer have the excuse that you just couldn’t make it to the gym on any given day.
The TRX Training website offers three core products to choose from
- the TRX Pro Kit
- the TRX Force Kit, and
- the TRX Rip Trainer
all of which bundle the suspension trainer or the rip trainer with some accessories you’ll find necessary. The TRX Pro Kit, for example, bundles the suspension trainer system with a TRX door anchor, a basic training DVD and a Quick Start Guide.
You can also purchase a number of other exercise tools separately, such as:
- Resistance cords
- Master jump rope
- TRX Talon Trainer
- Body strength and body flexibility posters
- “Bundles,” which are sets of DVDs, video downloads and/or books illustrating exercises to target a specific goal.
- Single DVDs
Depending on your needs, you may want to invest in one of the four different anchoring systems that the website offers for use with the equipment if the one you need isn’t included with the core kit you purchase.
How Does Trx Suspension Training Work?
Is TRX Training Worth It? – Key Features and Benefits
-
The TRX site has uploaded almost three hundred training videos to YouTube that can be accessed directly through the link it provides. These videos demonstrate the proper form to use for the exercises, and proper form is vital to preventing injury, regardless of whether you’re a novice or an exercise enthusiast. I know of no other fitness equipment site that has this extensive of a video library.
-
I find some fitness equipment websites cumbersome to navigate. The TRX Training site makes it easy for you to shop for products designed to help you meet your specific goals. You can shop by lifestyle—“sports enthusiast,” “traveler,” “adventurer,” “naturalist,” “workout maniac”—or fitness goal—“get stronger,” “metabolic conditioning,” “flexibility and balance,” “weight loss”—and the array of items that might fit your needs pops up. So you don’t have to waste time surfing the entire site—unless, of course, you can’t help yourself.
- The “Bundles” offered by the site are unique. There are twelve different ones, including the Golf Bundle, the Tennis Bundle, the Get Lean Bundle, and the Winter Sports Bundle. These contain a set of instructional DVDs, video downloads, and/or books with exercises targeted to the specific type of conditioning that will help you improve your game or attain some other goal. Knowing that I am following a professionally-designed set of exercises developed to help me achieve whatever it is I want to achieve is very motivational to me. I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time.
The portability of the exercise systems offered by TRX Training is probably the most attractive feature from my viewpoint, though. Not only can I throw it into my suitcase when I’m on the road, but I also don’t have to dedicate a full room in my home to fitness equipment in order to get a good workout.
TRX Training Cons – Disadvantages
1. The TRX Training website has a community element to it, which allows customers to post blogs, forums, and photos. However, when I clicked on the “forums” link, I found that a spammer had attacked it and had posted pages of unrelated products for sale. I found this worrisome. Perhaps the website needs to be monitored more closely.
2. Although there is a 100% satisfaction guarantee, it is only for 30 days, and shipping is not refunded. Furthermore, the 1-year warranty is limited to defects in materials and/or manufacturing. Given the cost of the systems, I believe the warranty should include breakage for whatever reason during the course of a year.
What Products Might Be Better Than TRX Training?
Key competitors of TRX Training are:
- Powerline Fitness Equipment
- Pro-Supra International Corporation
- Life Fitness
- Gym Source
- Acme Fitness
How Does TRX Training Compare To Similar Fitness Equipment?
I looked at a couple of the fitness equipment websites that are in direct competition with TRX Training.
The first was Powerline Fitness Equipment. The site offered a limited number of products, which varied from multi-station workout equipment to a man’s tank top. (Curiously, an electric guitar was also one of its offerings.) Unlike TRX Training, Powerline Fitness Equipment is only a distributor of the products it carries; it does not manufacture any of them.
I found the Body Vision PT600 Body Tower on this website. Like the TRX Trainers, it provides a full body workout. It is not portable, however, and some assembly is required, although most customers who had purchased the Tower reported that the assembly wasn’t difficult. The site listed the price as $299.99, marked down to $79.99. At the sale price, it is considerably cheaper than the TRX Trainers, which range in price from $189.95 to $249.95. That being said, you don’t purchase it (or any product) directly from the Powerline Fitness Equipment website. Instead, there is a link to Amazon.com.
Although Amazon.com may allow you to return the equipment, I could find no evidence of any warranty or guarantee from either Powerline Fitness or the manufacturer. Shipping costs apply unless you’re a member of the Amazon.com prime club, which qualifies you for free shipping on orders filled by Amazon. The Amazon.com customer reviews on the Tower were mostly positive, so I might give it a thumb’s up, but PowerlineFitnessEquipment.org definitely lacks in content and professionalism when compared to TrxTraining.com.
The second company I researched was Life Fitness. Its core products are cardio machines, such as treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical trainers, and strength training workstations. The cheapest of these was one of the bikes, and it was priced over $1,500.
Life Fitness also offers a Body Shape Kit that it promotes as a “complement” to its cardio and strength training equipment, which is a bit more portable, though not as portable as the TRX Trainers. The Body Shape Plus Kit consists of a heart rate monitor, two exercise DVDs, a stretch mat, a medicine ball, a balance ball, hand weights, resistance tubes and rings, a foam roller, an exercise towel, an exercise guide and a personal program planner.
The Body Shape Plus Kit currently sells for $399.00. Shipping is free—at least at the time of this writing. A click on the site’s “Fitness Advisor” tab provides fitness tips and a library of 109 instructional videos for viewing. There is also a “Virtual Trainer” feature that allows the user to create custom workouts or use one recommended by a certified fitness professional. The workouts can be downloaded to any USB device.
So while this site doesn’t have as many features as trxtraining.com, it compares much more favorably than does PowerlineFitnessEquipment.org. Interestingly enough, however, I found no mention of any guarantees or warranties in the product descriptions although there are customer support and technical support numbers provided. Buyer beware.
How Much Does Trx Training Cost?
The popular TRX Pro Kit is priced at $199.95, and the Rip Trainer Basic Kit is $189.95. The site currently has a closeout price of $174.95 on the TRX Force Kit, and the New TRX Force Kit: Tactical is priced at $249.95. One of these three kits is necessary to use the DVDs, video downloads, and other accessories that are offered on the site.
Additional resistance cords range in price from $18.95 to $24.95. The Bundles range in price from $19.95 to $299.95. Single DVDs are priced at either $34.95 or $39.95 and video downloads at $9.95.
Here are some examples:
- Light resistance cord = $18.95
- Master jump rope = $27.95
- Door anchor = $24.95
- Biomechanics: Healthy Back DVD = $34.95
- Kettleball: Iron Circuit Power DVD = $39.95
- Golf Bundle = $59.99
TRX Training is currently advertising free shipping on orders over $150, but I found that even when I entered an order for less than this amount, I was not charged shipping. You can receive a full refund of the purchase price if you return the product within 30 days. You are required to contact the company prior to mailing the product back, however. Shipping costs are not refunded.
Is it Safe to Buy the Discounted TRX?
You may be able to find TRX at a discounted price in some online stores. Beware of poorly made imitations that put your safety at risk. Authentic TRX products have a 100% satisfaction guarrantee and sell only from TRXTraining.com.
What Are Others Saying? Testimonials – Feedback – Comments
With few exceptions, the reviews of the products offered by TRX Training are very positive. In addition to the reviews written by the average Joe or Joan, there are a large number of testimonials from professional athletes, including MVP quarterback Drew Brees, Ironman Champion Tyler Stuart, UFC Fighter Roger Huerta, and U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Player Heather Mitts. Both the pros and the amateurs repeatedly praise the portability of the products and the effectiveness of the workouts.
