Why Lap Band Deterioration Shouldn’t Worry You

March 3, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Weight loss is a challenge for most people and can be one of the hardest things they have ever had to do for good health. For some, diets and exercising don’t work well for the amount of weight they need to lose. Even though they try to limit their daily calorie intake, and exercise regularly, they still find it hard to lose weight. If this weight becomes excessive over time, or starts to impact other existing health issues, it may be time for a surgical procedure to help them lose the weight they need to stay healthy.

Lap band surgeries have seen a rise in popularity in recent years as more doctors are becoming familiar with them and trained on the procedure. They involve a slightly less invasive surgery to accomplish than other methods and the results have been very good for most patients that have had the surgery. There is very little lap band deterioration over time and once the band has been put in place it can stay with the patient for the rest of their lives.

The way that a lap band procedure works is by fitting an adjustable band around the upper portion of the stomach. This band is attached through a laparoscopic procedure and is made of a hollow silastic material that can be adjusted after surgery to loosen or tighten the restriction it provides. By restricting the flow of food into the lower portion of the stomach, a lap band can regulate your hunger and help you lose weight by consuming fewer calories. These lap bands are designed to be fitted for life and there is no lap band deterioration over time because of its synthetic nature.

One major advantage to lap band surgery that helps many patients lose weight is the ability to adjust the band to accommodate a particular patients needs. By adjusting the restriction of the flow of food between the upper and lower stomach the level of hunger can be controlled and still allow proper nutrition for the patient. This band can be adjusted by injecting a quantity of saline solution into a tube that is located just under the patient’s skin.

Most patients that have the lap band procedure are successful in losing their weight over time. They do this through a combination of eating less and moderate exercise. There are very few problems associated with the lap band procedure and since there is no appreciable lap band deterioration over time, the device can be left in place and adjusted as needed for the patient’s life. The only issue that occurs in a small portion of patients is a movement of the lap band to another position of the stomach. Many patients mistakenly blame this on lap band deterioration or damage, when in fact it is most often caused by not following a proper diet and consuming too much food in a short period of a time. If a patient chooses this type of procedure to help them lose weight and follows the recommendations about diet and exercise that their doctor provides, this can be a very effective aid in losing the weight they need for good health.
