If you are diabetic, it’s harder to lose weight, but it’s also more important to keep your weight at a healthy level, and there’s the catch-22. You will need to follow not only the rules of the diet plan you select, but also check with the ADA’s diabetic food pyramid to make sure you are eating healthy foods that will lower your risk of diabetic complications.
The ADA food pyramid for diabetics is different than the FDA pyramid we see all the time. There are changes in the amounts of carbohydrates you can consume. Diabetes and obesity are related to one another, and the combination of the two can lead to illnesses including stroke and heart disease. Diabetes can be life-threatening, and since it can lead to severe health problems, your diet is a major part of treatment. Insulin and glucose levels are related, and portions and carbohydrates are important in guidelines for diabetics.
Diabetic meal plans are different from those that the USDA recommends for the population as a whole. Diabetics need to eat foods that help to regulate insulin, and they must avoid foods that will increase your body’s sugar levels. Proper foods for diabetics include foods that promote loss of weight and the maintenance of a healthy weight. You must also carefully monitor portions.
Diabetic portions will help you attain the level of 1600 to 2800 calories a day, but this is dependent on your exercise level. The less exercise you get, the fewer calories you should consume. The ADA recommends that you should consume between six and eleven starchy vegetables and grains per day. You should also eat three to five vegetable servings and two to four fruit portions a day. Sweets, fats and oils should not be consumed, unless they are in very small amounts.
To utilize a diabetic meal plan, order foods from a diabetic approved foods list. This will keep you from being tempted to buy improper foods at the grocery. You can use a pre-planned program such as Nutrisystem’s D Plan, or choose individual foods. Purchase and use a meal planner that outlines your daily meals.
Select an entrée for each meal, and add in fresh veggies or fruits. Meal preparation will only take a couple minutes. Eat approved foods at the meal times in your plan. You will be pleasantly surprised that eating more, smaller meals will give you energy throughout the day, and this will also keep your glucose levels basically even throughout the day.
Use the diabetic food pyramid along with fruits and vegetables. Be sure to get an adequate amount of exercise, too, to increase your weight loss and to keep fit.
