Are you exercising frantically? Living on lettuce leaves? Can’t remember the last time you ate a carb? But no matter how hard you try, the bathroom scales seem to be stuck, and that dress size is just out of reach. Sound familiar? Perhaps you are inadvertently sabotaging your weight loss campaign with one or more of these common diet mistakes.
Doing the same old same old.
One reason why diet and fitness plateaus happen is that your body becomes accustomed to your workout routine. You need to up the ante, and change your activity, and /or the intensity. After about 6 weeks of doing the very same thing over and over, your muscles go on the equivalent of auto pilot. Another solution is to mix up your workout activities, with a few different routines in the one week.
Eating the same old same old.
This is an easy blunder to overlook. Every time you lose a significant amount of weight, you will need to adjust your calorie intake. The less you weigh, the less your body needs to consume to maintain that weight. This is also the same for exercise, the less you weigh, the less calories you will burn performing the same activity. Every time you lose about 7 pounds, or 3 kilos, you will need to adjust your diet. If you are unsure, check out a calorie counter and burner for guidance.
Too many artificial sweeteners.
There is a reason why many diets recommend you drink water and steer clear of too many diet sodas and artificial sweeteners. The reason? Consuming too much diet soda on a daily basis has been linked to actual weight gain, and can also predispose you to metabolic syndrome. This is a medical condition that includes insulin resistance, extra abdominal fat (think muffin top), high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Diet sodas should be limited to 1 daily maximum. Be careful to not replace your diet soda habit with too much extra juice or sports drinks, or you will gain weight from the unaccustomed extra calories you will be drinking.
Not eating enough.
This can be almost as bad for your weight loss as eating too much. If you are literally living on lettuce leaves and the scales are not budging, then this may well be your problem. Look at a calorie burner calculator and see what you are really meant to be consuming in a day. You may be shocked at the calorie discrepancy. If you eat insufficient calories your body will put itself into starvation mode and your metabolism will slow right down. This means your body has decided that it doesn’t know when the next meal is coming and will hang on to every little calorie that you do eat. By eating a little more, your body is receiving signals that food is coming on a regular and reliable basis, and it will happily relinquish the pounds.
You can budge that muffin top. The bathroom scales will drop. Try these easy diet adjustments for weight loss success. Personally, I’m passing on the diet soda and reaching for the water bottle right now.
