The Stauer website features “smart luxuries” and “surprising prices” on every page. Though they are a Minnesota company, their site features products from all over the world. Their President, Michael Bisceglia, notes that Stauer sees itself as Personal Shoppers for its customers. They see as their mission to offer the finest watches, jewelry and luxury items at extraordinary prices. Stauer offers its website for shoppers who are unable to travel the world to find luxury items. Their major categories are:

How Does Stauer Compare To Similar Merchants

I looked into two different merchants of men’s watches to see how they compare with Stauer.

The first company I looked at was Fossil. Like Stauer, Fossil has been in business since 1984. They have an extensive line of watches that they market under their proprietary brands, much like Stauer does with its own brands. Their prices range from right at $100 to $235. Unlike Stauer, however, they offer much longer warranties on their watches of up to eleven years! And they acknowledge that their watches are “imported”.

The second company I looked at was Preferred Watches. Their large collection of men’s watches included everything from a super inexpensive Rave RV 1040 $14.45 watch to an $11000 Breitling. They offer a two year warranty for their expensive watches, which means they are not authorized dealers of brands like Breitling. Compared with Stauer, they offer more upper end watches – even an occasional Rolex – but most of their non big name brand watches are in the $100 to $200 category.

What Is The Cost?

Stauer offers unique watches to someone who is interested in conveying style by the watch they wear. Even Stauer’s harshest critics agree that their watches are beautiful. Here are some sample prices:

The web is filled with comments on Stauer, many of them negative, and many of them positive. The biggest complaint is that they charge a lot for inferior products. Several customers noted that their watch could not be fixed because watchmakers won’t work on Chinese-made products, though there is no place on the site noting where the watches were made.

Without exception, customers agreed that the watches were stylish and received complimentary comments from their friends. One commenter wondered if the raft of negative comments were in fact coming from a rival company. Another commenter noted that they had never bought anything via the Skymall that was worth owning, and that Stauer was no different. On balance, there were as many satisfied customers and complainers.
