My WSJ Wine Review
WSJ Wine is an online wine store brought to you by the Wall Street Journal, but operates independently of the news department. They specialize in the best wines from around the world, at the best prices. They have monthly specials, daily deals and various other special offers and discounts. Additionally, they offer expert advice and first class service backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
This service is very valuable to those who have trouble deciding which wines to buy, for people interested in trying small batch wines from independent vineyards and any one who loves to experiment with new and exciting wines from around the world.
The extensive product line includes:
- Monthly specials
- Annual dozen – selection of the year's best
- Super rich red wines
- Holiday specials
- Fine ports and sweets
Is WSJ Wine Worth It? – Key Features and Benefits
One of the main things that sets this merchant apart from the rest is the in-depth explanations. They offer many specials and other money saving opportunities. This gives you the chance to try wines from all over the world that you may not otherwise be able to afford.
The company is partnered with Tony Laithwaite, a world renown wine expert that scours the world for unique, small batch wines. With his wine knowledge and experience you never have to worry about getting the wrong bottle for the occasion.
The company promises high quality wines filled with character, outstanding value, expert advice and first class customer service.
- Most people enjoy drinking wine but would rather have somebody else select the best wine for them and deliver it to their home. The Discovery Club of WSJwines does just that. You enroll for free to this service that sends you a handpicked selection of 12 wines every 3 months. Your memberships qualifies you for 20% discount on every 12-bottle case that is shipped to you.
My favorite feature of this merchant is the About Wine section. Here you can learn where the grapes come from, the different types of grapes and many helpful hints about proper storage. If you don't store wine properly it will become undrinkable. There is a fine art behind storing the bottles and turning them as needed.
I also like the two gifts that WSJ wines offers to all Discovery Club members:
A Crystal Decanter from Riedel, an expensive glassware brand, or a Corkscrew
- Tasting notes from the wine maker that explain how each of the wines you ordered have been prepared, where the grapes were cultivated, etc
WSJ Wine Cons – Disadvantages
There are two major drawbacks on this merchant:
Unlike other online wine stores associated with Tony Laithwaite, this one does not boast of a 100% money back guarantee. If there is a guarantee, it is hard to find.
- There aren't any reviews from actual customers displayed on the site.
What Stores Might be Better Than WSJ Wine?
Aside from other online wine stores associated with Mr. Laithwaite, these stores are also in competition with WSJ Wine:
How Does WSJ Wine Compare to Similar Merchants?
The delivery of alcoholic beverages is strictly governed by local laws. This makes online wine stores somewhat limited as to where they can sell. However, I did find two stores within the same delivery area as WSJ Wine to make a fair comparison.
The first store I looked at was Wine Chateau. They have an impressive line of fine wines as well as high quality spirits. When comparing prices to WSJ Wine prices, you won't find much difference. Since the business is highly competitive, each tries to outdo the other. WSJ has many more specials and discounts than Wine Chateau, however shipping costs are about the same. The selection at each is large, but different. Each has their own wine expert that chooses which wines will be offered, so you rarely see the same wine on both websites.
The second store I researched was Vinfolio. Compared to WSJ Wine, this company offers many more products, such as gift cards. One unique aspect of Vinfolio is the marketplace. This is a special section for collectors, and people interested in buying or selling rare wines. It is set up like an auction. If you have a rare or unique wine you would like to sell, you can list it here. Also, if you are looking for a specific wine not found anywhere else, you may be able to find it here. Since it is an auction, there is no set price.
What is the Cost?
At WSJ Wine you can find wines priced below $10 or priced well into the hundreds of dollars per bottle. The more rare the wine, the more it will cost. There are wines for every pocketbook:
Holiday whites = $9.17 per bottle or $109.99 for 12
Villa Farnia di Farnese Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2009 = $11.99 per bottle or $109.99 for 12
Holiday mix = $9.17 per bottle or $109.99 per case of 12
WSJWine Annual Dozen Maggio Old Vine Zinfandel 2005 = $11.99 per bottle or $141.99 per case
The Magpie Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 = $39.99 per bottle or $477.99 for 12
- Joseph Phelps Insignia 2004 = $210 per bottle or $2 520 for 12
Whatever your price range, you are sure to find a wine to fit. Shipping $19.99 for one case and $14.99 for each additional case in the same order.
You can pay with Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express.
Discounts and specials are offered all the time. Keep your eye on the website to see when your favorite wine comes on sale, especially around holiday time.
What Are Others Saying? Testimonials – Feedback – Comments
According to WineClubDirectory, WSJ wines make a good gift but it is also great for personal consumption. WineClubReviews ranks WSJwine 3rd in their top 5 wine clubs list.
Based on reviewers’ comments, Customer Service appears prompt, informative, and handles credits and even refunds well to those who are not satisfied with the wines, as in the case of a gentleman who received a frozen case in the winter of 2009.
If you sign in the Discovery Club, expect to receive a case every 3 months. Some people complained because they thought they would receive a separate notification of the second case shipment while in reality the notification was inside the box of the first shipment.
